Welcome bags: A good thing or wasteful?
Welcome bags or baskets are gaining in popularity, especially for Destination Weddings. At first, I thought they were a cool idea. And we even did tiny ones for our wedding (really tiny, just some Godiva chocolates and coffees and mugs). But now I am starting to think its a real waste.
People are putting in sunscreen, maps, bottled water, etc. Honestly, if I need sunscreen I will bring my own– my own brand that I like, in the SPF that I need. I would have bought a map or guidebook months in advance to plan for my trip. And I try to avoid bottled water. You see where Im going with this: whatever is in the bag is usually more trouble than its worth.
I suppose a nice jam or local specialty would be ok. But for the most part, these welcome bags seem like a pile of junk no one wants.
Whats your opinion?
I think that local things are nice but the normal toiletries and water are a waste. Most nice hotels provide bottles of water in the rooms, as well as guide books, maps and things of that nature at the concierge desk. A local wine and some nice glasses, local jam and fresh baked bread, fresh local fruit or something of that nature would be lovely though, with a little welcome note from the couple. We used our wedding website to highlight local attractions and included maps and attractions in our Invitations. But I think a nice, small, LOCAL welcome basket is nice. Just nothing useless or redundant.
